Title : Koi Shehri Babu Dil Lehri Babu Haye Re (Loafer-1973) on Harmonium
Description : My Choice - My Harmonium

Heard it from some movie - “Do you know why the bride and groom are forced to take so much pain such as fasting, sitting before the heat of the ‘havan’ fire etc. - before the wedding? Because they should never dare to think of a divorce and a second marriage”.
Jokes apart, Indian weddings are special for their elaborate planning, different phases of enjoyment during the pre-wedding days, occasional outburst of emotion triggered by the thought of separation in case of a daughter’s wedding. The tension in the family, apprehension in the mother’s mind and during not-so-free economy days, the financial burden on the earning members. To relieve these burdens the weddings are also accompanied by fun components like the “Sangeet” (=Music). which also shows how music is an integral part of the Indian life style.

The days of singing simple traditional songs about Banna-Banni with dolaks, spoons and harmonium, and teasing are over. It’s not just an assembly of women, singing songs and teasing the bride, but a painstakingly planned event that is an elaborate and extravagant affair nowadays. The participation is not just restricted to the bride’s family, and women. Nowadays, wedding planners, event management companies and choreographers are involved to provide a seamless experience. Sometimes there is a set theme for the event. It may be Casino night or other popular theme like Disco, where the guests have a set dress-code as 80s disco icons… But the charm of old tradition still lingers.

Presenting an instrumental for such a song from the movie Loafer-1973

Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s super melodious traditional style composition sung by Asha Bonsle is one which immediately relates to the wedding preparation and the would-be-bride being teased by her friends. I love the sound of Harmonium for such songs with traditional style of playing.

Movie - Loafer (1973)
Original Playback: Asha Bhonsle
Music: Laxmikant-Pyarelal
Lyrics: Anand Bakshi
Ktrack - Courtesy: "Eternity"

I wanted to record a live version for this song but could not convince myself to remove the dance steps that is an essential element of this song. So, I may upload another version with a video of the Harmonium fingering sometime later.

**** Note: There are pieces of the reed organ on the Ktrack itself that have not been played by me - I have only covered the vocal with Harmonium.
